Bing in the New Year is a free, outdoor, family-friendly New Year's Eve event in downtown Milwaukie that culminates with a 9 p.m. (East Coast midnight) "cherry drop" lowering, by crane, of a 7-foot, lighted Bing cherry designed by Schilling Lights on Lark. The Milwaukie Arts Committee organizes the event.
The Bing cherry was first cultivated in 1875 in Milwaukie, Oregon. It was named for the Chinese nursery foreman, Ah Bing, who grew the new variety of cherry. Bing in the New Year is a celebration of this history! Visit the Milwaukie Sculpture Garden, where artist Tyler Fuqua has created a steel cherry sculpture, to learn more.
The inaugural Bing in the New Year was Dec. 31, 2023 at Main & Harrison (site of the Milwaukie Farmers Market). We are working to bring the event back in 2024, from 6-9 p.m., with more tents, more kid's activities, more performances, a larger beer garden and vendors. Stay tuned!
Our first ever Bing in the New Year received media coverage from The Oregonian, The Milwaukie Review, KPTV, and KGW. Thank you to all the media outlets who shared Ah Bing's story!
We are looking for partners for the second annual Bing in the New Year on
Dec. 31, 2024! If your business or organization would like to be a sponsor,
